CEO

Shani Dowell is the Founder and CEO of Possip, an organizational listening platform that helps schools, districts, and organizations truly hear from the people they serve. A product of Houston public schools and a former public school math teacher and parent, Shani built Possip in 2017 to help school and district leaders have a better system to easily listen, learn, and act – and to give families an easy and accessible way to share their insight and experience.
She holds a BA from Howard University and an MBA from Stanford University. Shani began her career as a consultant at Bain & Company and helped launch the Posse Foundation's Boston office. She has also held roles at Houston Independent School District, the KIPP Foundation, Teach For America, the Bridgespan Group, and Relay Graduate School of Education — experience that shapes Possip's mission to make listening data-driven, simple, inclusive, and actionable.

When outside of work, she's on her Peloton for fitness, listening to podcasts, writing, singing in her car, and exploring soccer with her teenagers.

Listening As A Retention Strategy with Shani Dowell

Shani Dowell left a business career for a seventh-grade math classroom, then left the classroom to build Possip a listening platform now used by over 1,000 schools in 35+ states. In this episode, she talks candidly about her non-traditional path into teaching, the reality of a two-teacher household on a $30K salary, recruiting at HBCUs, and why "contentedness" might be the most underrated wellness strategy for educators. If you've ever had an idea and wondered how to start small, take a look at this episode.
