I share a story I’ve never told in full. I flunked out of college my second year. Honestly? I felt relief. I didn’t want to be there, and I was woefully unprepared for higher education—despite graduating from a so-called top school for gifted students in Detroit.
But that wasn’t the end. With no car and no real plan, I enrolled at a local community college because the bus outside my house took me there. A work-study job at the on-campus preschool changed everything. A staff member looked me in the eye and said, “You should be a teacher.” That one sentence—plus a heartfelt prayer—redirected my life.
This is a story about failure, faith, and finding your purpose when everything feels uncertain. If you’re a Black educator, a late bloomer, or someone still figuring it out—this one’s for you.
